Quranic Verses on Same-Sex Relationships

Quranic Verses on Same-Sex Relationships

Compiled by Jawed Anwar

The Quran addresses homosexuality primarily through the story of Prophet Lot (Lut) and his people, portraying it as a grave moral transgression that leads to divine punishment. This is detailed across several surahs, emphasizing the unnaturalness of the act, the call to repentance, and the consequences for those who persist. Below are the key verses.

Surah Al-A'raf (7:80-84)

(7:80) And remember when We sent Lot (as a Messenger) to his people and he said to them: 'Do you realize you practice an indecency of which no other people in the world were guilty of before you?

(7:81) You approach men lustfully in place of women. You are a people who exceed all bounds.

(7:82) Their only answer was: 'Banish them from your town. They are a people who pretend to be pure.

(7:83) Then We delivered Lot and his household save his wife who stayed behind

(7:84) and We let loose a shower [of stones] upon them, Observe, then, the end of the evil-doers.

Surah Hud (11:77-83)

(11:77) And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was perturbed by their coming and felt troubled on their account, and said: 'This is a distressing day.

(11:78) And his people came to him rushing. Before this they were wont to commit evil deeds. Lot said: 'My people! Here are my daughters; they are purer for you. Have fear of Allah and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not even one right-minded person in your midst?

(11:79) They said: 'Surely you already know that we have nothing to do with your daughters. You also know well what we want.'

(11:80) He said: 'Would that I had the strength to set you straight, or could seek refuge in some powerful support.'

(11:81) Thereupon the angels said: 'O Lot! We indeed are messengers of your Lord. And your people will in no way be able to hurt you. So depart with your family in a part of the night and let no one of you turn around excepting your wife (who shall not go); for what will befall them shall also befall her. In the morning their promised hour will come. Is not the morning near?'

(11:82) And when Our command came to pass, We turned the town upside down, and rained on it stones of baked clay, one on another,

(11:83) marked from your Lord. Nor is the punishment far off from the wrong-doers.

Surah Ash-Shu'ara (26:165-175)

(26:165) What, of all creation will you go to (fornicate with) the males,

(26:166) leaving aside those whom Allah has created for you as your mates. Nay, you are a people that has transgressed all limits."

(26:167) They said: "O Lot! If you do not desist, you will be one of those expelled (from our towns)."

(26:168) He said: "I am one of those who abhor your practice.

(26:169) My Lord, deliver me and my family from their wicked deeds."

(26:170) Then We delivered him and all his family

(26:171) except an old woman who was among those that stayed behind.

(26:172) Thereafter, We utterly destroyed the rest,

(26:173) and We sent upon them a rain, an evil rain that fell on those who had been warned.

(26:174) Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe.

(26:175) Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate.

Surah An-Naml (27:54-58)

(27:54) We also sent Lot, and recall when he told his people: "Do you commit shameless acts with your eyes open?

(27:55) Do you lustfully approach men instead of women? Nay, you engage in acts of sheer ignorance.

(27:56) But this had only one answer from his people. They said: "Expel Lot's folk from your city. They pretend to be absolutely clean."

(27:57) Eventually We saved (Lot) and his family, except his wife. We had decreed that she should be among those who would remain behind.

(27:58) And We rained down upon them a rain. It was an evil rain for those who had already been warned.

Surah Al-Ankabut (29:28-35)

(29:28) We sent Lot and he said to his people: “You commit the abomination that none in the world ever committed before you.

(29:29) What! Do you go to men (to satisfy your lust), engage in highway robbery, and commit evil deeds in your gatherings?” Then they had no answer to offer other than to say: “Bring Allah's chastisement upon us if you are truthful.”

(29:30) Lot said: “My Lord, aid me against these mischievous people.”

(29:31) When Our emissaries brought the good news to Abraham, and said (to him): “We are surely going to destroy the inhabitants of this city; its inhabitants are immersed in wrong-doing.”

(29:32) Abraham said: “But Lot is there.” They replied: “We are well aware of those who are there. We shall save him and all his household except his wife.” His wife is among those who will stay behind.

(29:33) When Our emissaries came to Lot he was distressed and embarrassed on their account. They said: “Do not fear nor be distressed. We shall save you and all your household except your wife who is among those that will stay behind.

(29:34) We shall bring down upon the people of this city a scourge from the heaven because of their evildoing.”

(29:35) And We have certainly left for it a sign therein for a people who use reason.

Surah Al-Hijr (15:58-77)

(15:58) They said: "Verily we have been sent to a guilty people

(15:59) excepting the household of Lot. We shall deliver all of them,

(15:60) except his wife (about whom Allah says that) We have decreed that she shall be among those who stay behind."

(15:61) So when the envoys came to the household of Lot,

(15:62) he said: "Surely you are an unknown folk.

(15:63) They said: "Nay, we have brought to you that concerning which they have been in doubt.

(15:64) We truly tell you that we have brought to you the Truth.

(15:65) So set out with your family in a watch of the night, and keep yourself behind them, and no one of you may turn around, and keep going ahead as you have been commanded."

(15:66) And We communicated to him the decree that by the morning those people will be totally destroyed.

(15:67) In the meantime the people of the city came to Lot rejoicing.

(15:68) He said: "These are my guests, so do not disgrace me.

(15:69) Have fear of Allah, and do not humiliate me."

(15:70) They replied: "Did we not forbid you again and again to extend hospitality to all and sundry?"

(15:71) Lot exclaimed in exasperation: "If you are bent on doing something, then here are my daughters.

(15:72) By your life, (O Prophet), they went about blindly stumbling in their intoxication.

(15:73) Then the mighty Blast caught them at sunrise,

(15:74) and turned the land upside down, and rained down stones of baked clay.

(15:75) There are great Signs in this for those endowed with intelligence.

(15:76) The place (where this occurred) lies along a known route.

(15:77) Verily there is a Sign in this for the believers.
